Acea: from a municipal electricity company to a multiutility for water, energy and the environment

1909 Sees the creation of AEM (Azienda Elettrica Municipale) of Rome City Council, with the aim of supplying energy for public and private lighting. In 1912 the Montemartini Power Station is opened.

1937 The Governor of Rome entrusts AEM with the construction and management of the aqueducts and water distribution networks for Rome. AEM is transformed into AGEA, Azienda Governatoriale Elettricità e Acque. Work starts on the Peschiera Aqueduct.

1945 At the end of the Second World War Rome can only call on the Montemartini Power Station. AGEA becomes ACEA, Azienda Comunale Elettricità e Acque.

1964 At the end of the concession to SAPAM, Società Acqua Pia Antica Marcia, the Marcio Aqueduct is transferred to ACEA, which in 1945 became Azienda Comunale Elettricità e Acque. This achieves the unification of water distribution, with ACEA as the sole operator.

1985 Acea takes over the purification service, with a pool of over 3,000,000 inhabitants. The foundations are thus laid for the integrated management of the whole water cycle.

1989 Acea becomes Azienda Comunale Energia e Ambiente.

1992 Acea is transformed from a Municipal Company to a Special Status Company.

1998 Since 1 January it has been a Società per Azioni (joint-stock company).

1999 On 16 July the company makes its debut on the Stock Market with the placement of 49% of the share capital.

2000 Acea changes face and launches an institutional campaign to combine economic growth with respect for people and the environment.

2001 The Acea Group purchases the electricity distribution division for the metropolitan area of Rome from Enel. Acea Distribuzione thus becomes the second biggest electricity distributor.

2002 Acea and the Belgian company Electrabel create a joint venture to develop energy activities: production, trading and sales to free market customers and customers under contract. It takes over management of the whole sewerage system in Rome.

2003 On 1 January launches the integrated water service in Ato 2 (Rome – Central Latium) and in the same year wins the right to manage the service in new Ambiti territoriali ottimali (Ato - optimal local environments). Acea consolidates its national leadership. The company purchases a stake in Tirreno Power and establishes a plan to enhance production.

2004 The “Più energia per Roma” project starts with a 750 million euro investment plan over 10 years, to enhance the electricity distribution network in Rome.

2005 A 10-year, 100 million euro plan starts to modernise the capital’s public lighting system.

2006 The Company enters the waste to energy sector with the purchase of Tad Energia e Ambiente.

2007 To support the Group’s growth strategies, at the end of 2007 an important investment plan is presented covering 2008-2012 and which is worth over 2 billion euro.

2008 The millionth electronic meter is installed in Rome. The project to substitute the old style electro-mechanical meters will be completed in 2010.

2009 Acea celebrates its 100th anniversary and launches a new cycle. The Company consolidates its position as an Italian operator in water, energy and the environment.
